Those Lying Bus Drivers

One day I got on the #66 at Dudley Station. I forgot my bus pass. Through the T Riders Union, I know that I can not be thrown off the bus simply because I don't have the fair and, besides, I had already purchased a combo pass. The female bus driver told me that I had to pay my fair. I told her that I forgot my bus pass and that I know the MBTA policy is to take down my contact information and bill me for 90 cents.

The bus driver told me that I had to pay or get off. I refused. I didn't make any trouble, I just refused to get off the bus. The driver called in on her walkie talkie and told the person on the other end that I was yelling and causing a disturbance and to send the police. You see, the only way to get me off the bus is if I am creating a disturbance to the other passengers. I wasn't, but the driver had no other excuse to get me off the bus.

Meanwhile the bus was filling up and the driver still refused to move. I called the head of the T-Riders Union, Khalida Smalls, to assist me. She came and, again, explained the MBTA policy to the driver. The driver said that she wasn't moving and called in on her walkie talkie again. This time, she said that I was fighting with Khalida and disrupting the bus and to please hurry and send the police. 35 minutes later, the police still hadn't come. Another bus had come and the passengers got off the bus and went to the other one.

When the police finally arrived, I explained what had happened. I told the officer that the bus driver had filed a false complaint. Both Ms. Smalls and I told him that we had not been arguing or fighting but had simply explained the MBTA policy that the driver should have known.

Names were taken and a complaint was filed. Nothing was done to the lying bus driver, and I was late for my appointment.
