Dudley festival places focus on area's changes

"Activists working in this area believe the current movement to create more inclusive programs will have historic economic impact. The annual event highlights the services of Alternatives for Community & Environment (ACE), an organization committed to organizing local residents to address environmental and social justice issues. The small Roxbury-based nonprofit also used this year’s forum, which organizers say had been in the works for two months, to bring the community’s attention to the development going on right behind the festival. "This was all about how do we get people to have a good time in Dudley, but also to build a sense of community," said Lee Matsueda, a community organizer with ACE. "This is a beginning of a process." 'We're going to need to see a lot more [green jobs] on a much larger scale than we have before,' says Penn Loh, executive director of Roxbury's Alternatives for Community & Environment, an organization focused on eradicating environmental racism that is also a member of Community Labor United. 'This could be as big as the New Deal and the restructuring of the economy after the stock market crash and the Great Depression. We're at a turning point in human history.' Tiara Amarante's bus ride to school is a daily exercise in dodging danger. Last month, Amarante and nine other teenagers who take Bus 23 to school or to get around their neighborhood decided to do something about it. They would survey other passengers, document their stories, and try to persuade MBTA officials to take action.

Officials from the T Riders Union, an advocacy group strongly against the proposed fare increase, believe the newly proposed fare increase will only put a Band-Aid on the T’s fiscal woes and in three years the T will be asking taxpayers for more cash. The last fare increase was in 2003. “We are looking to the MBTA to acknowledge there’s a larger problem,” said Lee Matsueda of the T Riders Union. “There’s been a cycle [of fare increases], and the service continues to be the same.”
