March to Stop Trump’s Budget Cuts & Rent Increases!
For his 2018 budget, President Trump has proposed to cut 250,000 Section 8 Vouchers, which could force Housing Agencies to terminate Voucher holders in the middle of their lease. Trump proposes to cut Public Housing repairs by 37%, and to end all grants for city housing programs and new housing. These are the deepest cuts to HUD in its history!
The Administration also proposes to raise rents for five million HUD assisted families, from 30 to 35% of income and repeal Enhanced Vouchers in “expiring use” HUD housing. If passed, Trump’s proposals will put tens of thousands of families out on the street, as soon as October 1!
Beyond that, the Administration has proposed to slash or end virtually every “safety net” program for the American people, including Medicaid, Food Stamps, education and job training, childcare, and legal services. These cuts would pay for a $5.5 trillion tax cut to billionaires and increased spending on the Pentagon, “border security,” and the Wall.
The US House has already voted to take away health care from 24 million people to pay for a huge tax cut for the rich. Trump’s budget cuts and War Against the Poor are a recipe for austerity, inequality, war, racism and fear.
Rally for the Peoples Budget!
There is an alternative! On May 2 the Congressional Progressive Caucus released its “Peoples Budget” for 2018. The Peoples Budget prevents cuts, increases safety net programs and Social Security, invests $2 trillion in jobs and infrastructure, taxes the 1%, closes corporate tax loopholes, and cuts the Pentagon’s dangerous nuclear weapons buildup.
