May 20, 2010
ACE’s annual celebration and fundraiser, Jammin' for Justice, is next Wednesday, May 26! Members and supporters will be celebrating with delicious food, a live band, silent auction and dance performances. This is also an opportunity to showcase outstanding environmental justice work. In the next few days we will be highlighting our 2010 Environmental Justice Award honorees.
Today’s honoree is ACE member Judy Babikian.
Judy has been a member of the T Riders’ Union for more than four years. She has represented ACE and TRU before the MBTA Board of Directors and the state government. Recently, she organized a campaign with members of the Chelsea TRU Committee to install local bus shelters. As an active ACE Member, Judy has played a crucial role in recruiting members to the Chelsea TRU Committee.
Judy is a dedicated supporter of ACE and has helped to organize and implement events such as EJ in the Hood and the ACE annual meeting. Her leadership and expertise have helped ACE and TRU develop strategic campaigns, build membership and achieve victories for environmental justice.
Currently, Judy is supporting TRU members in the work to improve bus service for senior housing communities in Chelsea. Judy is dedicated to accessibility for T riders—she has pushed for increased wheelchair accessibility on the MBTA and testified in favor of The Ride, which provides transportation for seniors and the disabled. Judy has a real commitment to social justice and believes that everyone has the right to dignity regardless of their background, class or skin color. Thank you, Judy, for all your hard work!
