Environmental Justice Award 2009
Michelle McGruder

As an organizer, advocate and caring mother, Michelle has led the T Riders Union (TRU) with much knowledge and insight. Her dedication to fighting racism, classism and oppression has taken her from schools to the T to the streets in our communities.

Michelle's passion for outreach means she has a relationship with just about everyone in Dudley Square, helping to connect ACE's organizing work to our base.

Michelle has been involved with ACE for many years, starting with transit issues and the Healthy Hair Show in the late '90s. In 2008, she successfully applied for the TRU Member Internship Position, supporting our work for an affordable and sustainable public transit system. Michelle completed the 300 hour program, during which time she assumed the TRU Chairperson role, serving in this capacity for almost ten months.

Her accomplishments include leading TRU's survey campaign in the summer 2008, which collected over 1,000 surveys from bus riders on service issues. As a member and facilitator of TRU’s Campaign Committee, she came up with the idea of holding a Bake Sale for the MBTA to draw attention to the transit authority's dire financial situation and ask legislators to pass T Debt Relief legislation. Despite heavy winds and wet snow, the event was a success, raising nearly $200 for the T and resulting in more than a dozen media hits.

Since ACE chose Michelle to receive this award, she achieved yet another milestone. In April she was hired as ACE’s new Community Organizer. We thank Michelle for her profound service to ACE and TRU and look forward to many more years of working in solidarity and enjoying her wonderful sense of humor.
