Time is running out for us to Save the T! Despite thousands of riders testifying in opposition to fare increases and service cuts and providing real solutions to the budget gap, the MBTA board appears poised to approve a proposal that will have a devastating effect on the lives of riders, our economy and our environment.
At the MBTA board meeting on April 4, RIDE paratransit users, senior, youth and transit-dependent riders intend to make it clear that the final fare increase and service cuts proposal, as well as their targeting of the RIDE users and seniors for the most extreme increases is unacceptable.
Financial solutions have been offered to the MBTA board including $25 million in potential savings a year from renegotiating bad interest rate swap deals with banks that include Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan Chase and UBS. These are resources that could offset the disproportionate impacts of the MBTA’s final fare increase and service cuts proposal on THE RIDE paratransit, senior, youth and transit-dependent riders.
It is time for Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo, Senate President Therese Murray and Governor Deval Patrick to take leadership now and invest in a sustainable public transit system for all.
