This barn-raising is organized by the Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET), a Cambridge-based co-op bringing neighbors together to weatherize homes and take the energy future into our own hands.
Saturday, January 16, 2010
from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
302 Summer Street
Arlington, MA 02474

This home is leaking 3100 CFM (cubic feet of air per minute). That is the equivalent of a 2 foot by 1 foot window open 24/7 all winter long!
No experience is necessary. Experienced team leaders will guide us through all the work, which will include:
- Foam and caulk the basement interior/exterior. Use sheet metal screws to properly attach the dryer vent and do some pipe wrapping.
- Seal leaks in the duct work with metal tape and mesh plus duct mastic in some places.
- Seal penetrations in the basement ceiling with metal lath and plaster.
- Caulk around windows and doors and install switch/outlet gaskets. Use minimally expanding foam in the closets to block cold attic air.
- Use sheet metal screws to better attach some duct work in one room, and seal basement windows.
- Knee wall team will crawl in and seal between the joists with insulation wrapped in plastic bags, stuffing them in the holes and then foaming around them.
- Q-Lon team will install latches on the four knee-wall hatches and then use loose q-lon strips, rather than the typical q-lon on runners, to seal those hatches.
