#FightTheHike Accountability Action on Monday

March 7, 2016

It's all come down to this: On Monday, March 7, the MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board (FMCB) will be voting on whether to increase fares.

Please join us at 1:00 p.m. at the Transportation Building to hold the FMCB accountable!

These hikes will disproportionately hurt youth, seniors, people of color and low-income riders. Student and Youth Passes could be raised as much as 23.1 percent, bus passes 19.5 percent and THE RIDE and senior fares 10.3 percent.

Compare these to the average raise on the commuter rail - a service that predominately services wealthier suburban communities - from 3.9 percent in the MBTA's lower proposal to 6.3 percent in the higher proposal (some hikes as low as zero percent in both scenarios).

The disparate impact on the most vulnerable riders does not seem to trouble the FMCB, who was recently rebuked by the Federal Transit Administration for failing to run a civil rights analysis on cutting late-night service. (Like fare hikes, the elimination of this service overwhelmingly harms low-income riders and people of color.)

Neither the thousands of public comments - the vast majority opposed to fare hikes - have moved the FMCB, nor the numbers from their own survey that show 43 percent of riders would stop riding the MBTA under the higher increase, and 29 percent would stop under the lower increase.

After a hard-fought battle, our gloves are now off for the vote on fare hikes. The FMCB has rigged the fight by misrepresenting the size of the budget deficit, breaking the fare cap law, dismissing equity concerns and more. It's time to #FightTheHike and hold the board accountable.
