Office Manager/Bookkeeper position available

ACE is seeking a full-time Office Manager/ Bookkeeper to support operations by maintaining office, human resources and accounting systems, by overseeing day to day office functions and maintaining accurate financial records. The ideal candidate will be someone who has strong administrative, financial and organizational skills. He or she will be committed to getting results in fast-paced environment and able to handle a heavy workload without dropping the ball. About Alternatives for Community & Environment
Located in Dudley Square, Roxbury, ACE is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization whose mission is to build the power of low income communities and communities of color in MA to achieve environmental justice. ACE organizes residents, provides legal/technical support to community groups, develops youth leadership, and runs campaigns on issues like clean air and better public transit.

Job Responsibilities
The Office Manager/ Bookkeeper reports to the Executive Director, and is responsible for the following:

  • Bookkeeping/ Accounting: Bookkeeping tasks including entering all data, invoices and receipts into accounting system, managing accounts payable and accounts receivable, generating reports for Executive Director and program staff review, and liaison with our financial consultant. Maintain the general ledger, manage cash flows, and make bank and other reconciliations.
  • Human Resources: Administer payroll and benefits (including health insurance and 401K plan). When necessary/appropriate coordinate interns/volunteers to help with office tasks.
  • Office Support: Order office equipment/supplies; distribute mail, liaison with landlord and all other office vendors. Maintain organizational files and all business records for the organization.
  • Qualifications
    We’re seeking candidates who excel in communication and relationship-building, are organized and detail-oriented, and have strong project management skills. You should have:

  • A track record of developing and maintaining strong working relationships with and among a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • A demonstrated commitment to meeting a high bar and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and ability to prioritize tasks and problem solve.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ACE’s mission and values.
    Prior experience in a social justice nonprofit environment and bilingual skills are plusses but are not requirements. Women and candidates of color are encouraged to apply.
  • Salary & Benefits: $37,000- $43,000 depending on experience. ACE offers generous health, vacation and retirement benefits.

    Alternatives for Community & Environment (ACE) seeks a full-time Community Organizer to build on the success of the T Riders Union (TRU) program. TRU has been a voice for transit dependent riders in the Boston area and will continue the fight for transit affordability, reliability, and accessibility. The Community Organizer will work with members to organize ACE members and constituents with a focus on bus riders and the issue of public transit. The Community Organizer will also serve on ACE’s Organizing Team and support other environmental justice organizing projects at ACE.

    Based in Roxbury, ACE is a non-profit environmental justice organization that builds the power of communities of color and low-income communities in Massachusetts to eradicate environmental racism and classism, create healthy, sustainable communities, and achieve environmental justice. We believe that everyone has the right to a healthy environment and to be decision makers in issues affecting our communities. ACE organizes residents, provides legal/technical support to community groups, develops youth leadership, and coordinates campaigns on critical environmental justice issues.

    Responsibilities include: community outreach, member and media communications, member recruitment and retention, leadership development, volunteer coordination, facilitation of the TRU member meetings, intern supervision, campaign support and advocacy, representation of ACE/TRU in coalitions, coordination of work with allies, support for program planning, fundraising and reporting to funders, and support for ACE-wide events and activities.

    Qualifications

  • 3-5 years organizing including other relevant experience with people from low-income communities and communities of color
  • Strong commitment to social/environmental justice and community organizing
  • Track record of developing and maintaining relationships with members, and recruiting new members
  • Experience training members to be community organizers
  • Experience working in grassroots community groups
  • Good listening and communication skills with a variety of audiences
    • direct outreach to community residents (MBTA bus/station outreach and door knocking)
    • ability to collaborate with young people and support youth led organizing
    • experience working in coalition and partnership with other organizations
    • media outreach
    • legislators and public officials
    • ability to work in a team with members and staff
    • effective group/meeting facilitation and presentation
    • experience giving and receiving feedback
  • Well-organized and experience keeping a work plan
  • Solid computer skills (familiar with Word, Excel, Internet, and databases)
  • Self-starter, quick learner, and ability to work in fast-paced environment
  • Flexibility to work weeknights and weekends
  • Spanish fluency preferred, but not required
  • Salary: $35,000-$40,000 depending on experience, plus an MBTA bus pass, and health and retirement benefits.
